Will You Be Lisping Through Life with Invisalign? Here’s What to Expect

If you’re thinking about Invisalign, you’ve probably studied up on all its great benefits. However, you may not have come across any information about potential side effects. One of the most common? Small speech impediments. While this may sound annoying, it shouldn’t make you think twice about clear aligner treatment. In fact, most patients adapt quickly, so it’s a non-issue. Still, it’s best to know about it now and be prepared. Here’s what you should know about the Invisalign adjustment period.

You May Lisp the First Few Days

When you first pop in your aligners, you may notice a slight lisp. This happens because even though your trays will sit snugly over your teeth, they still slightly elevate the surface of your smile. At first, this can make it difficult for your tongue to navigate.

The most commonly affected sounds are “s,” “z,” and “sh.” However, these changes are usually minor and not as noticeable to others as they are to you!

The Speech Changes Won’t Last

For most people, the Invisalign adjustment period lasts a few days to a week. The more you talk, the quicker you’ll adapt to the presence of your trays. If you want to speed this process up, there are some things you can try.

First, read out loud at home. Not only is this a great excuse to revisit your favorite book, but it also forces your tongue to pronounce words you might not use in regular conversation.

Next, look online to find some tongue twisters. With some repetition, you’ll be tossing aside your tongue-tied ways in no time.

Lastly, keep your trays on. The longer you wear them, the more time your mouth has to adjust to the presence of the aligners.

There’s No Long-Term Impact

Once your mouth adjusts, Invisalign won’t affect your speech at all. You’ll be able to talk, present, and sing loudly to the radio in your car as normal!

If speech issues continue beyond a week, it’s a good idea to check in with your dentist. While early adjustments are uncommon, they do occur and can be necessary to alleviate some “growing pains” associated with your aligners.

Wearing Invisalign might cause a few verbal hiccups at the start, but it’s nothing you can’t overcome. Within days, your speech will be back to normal, and you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully straightened smile.
