Getting braces is an exciting step toward achieving a healthier, straighter smile. But if you play a wind (flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, bassoon)  or brass instrument (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba), you might wonder how orthodontic treatment will affect your ability to play. The truth is that braces can cause some initial challenges, but with practice and the right techniques, most musicians adapt quickly.

Here are five tips to help you keep making music while wearing braces.

1. Give Yourself Time to Adjust and Communicate Your Needs

When braces are first placed, it’s normal to feel some discomfort while playing. Your lips and cheeks need time to get used to the brackets and wires. Be patient with yourself, and allow for shorter practice sessions at first. Over time, your muscles will adapt, and playing will feel more natural again. Let your band director know so they’re best able to support you. Sometimes, this may mean adjusting a part temporarily or giving you extra flexibility with breaks.

2. Use Orthodontic Wax for Comfort

The brackets of braces can sometimes rub against the inside of your lips while playing. Orthodontic wax provides a smooth barrier between your braces and soft tissues, reducing irritation. Many musicians find that applying wax before practice or performance makes playing more comfortable, especially in the early weeks.

3. Modify Your Mouthpiece Technique

Different instruments require different embouchure (mouth positioning) techniques, and braces may change how your lips make contact with the mouthpiece. Try experimenting with small adjustments in pressure and positioning until you find what works best for you. If possible, work with your music teacher or band director for guidance on maintaining tone quality while protecting your mouth.

4. Time Braces Around Concerts

If possible, try to schedule the start of orthodontic treatment right after a concert. Band programs typically rehearse the same music for weeks leading up to a performance. Beginning braces in between concert cycles means you won’t have to re-learn music you’ve already worked hard to perfect. It also gives you some breathing room to adjust before the next big performance.

5. Consider Protective Accessories

There are specialized products designed to help musicians with braces. For example, lip protectors or guards can be worn over braces during practice, reducing irritation and allowing for smoother play. Ask your orthodontist if they recommend any of these options for your instrument.

With patience and the right adjustments, braces don’t have to hold you back from enjoying music. In fact, many musicians find that after the initial learning curve, they can play just as well—or even better—than before.

Going through your teeth straightening journey with clear aligners can be very exciting. By the end, you’ll have perfectly aligned teeth, but since they aren’t the same as traditional braces, people tend to ask, “Does Invisalign hurt?” While first starting treatment or switching to a new set of trays can cause some discomfort, there are tricks you can do to lessen the soreness! To ensure your smile stays on track, here are five helpful tips to deal with new aligner discomfort.

1.)  Continue to Wear Your Aligners

The main reason your teeth feel tender with Invisalign is that they apply gentle pressure to shift your teeth. In order for them to correct your misalignment, it's crucial to wear them for 20-22 hours a day. Thankfully, your mouth will get used to having your Invisalign trays in, but you have to keep them in despite any discomfort. The good news is that the sore feeling means they are working!

2.)  Drink Some Cold Water

Having a cold glass of water is a great way to help ease your transition by soothing the muscles in your mouth. You can also apply a cold compress to your cheek for about 10-minute intervals.

3.)  Use Dental Wax

Sometimes, the edges of your Invisalign trays may be a little rough. That may irritate your gums and tongue, but dental wax is a safe way to create a barrier over the edges. With a small piece of wax, you roll it up and gently mold it against the rough areas.

Also, keep in mind that if you’re having consistent trouble with your aligners, let your dentist know! Having them double-check the fit of the trays can ensure that they stay as comfortable as possible.

4.)  Eat Soft Foods at First

If your teeth are sore, then it can be harder to enjoy your favorite crunchy snacks or chewy meals. Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days while you are adjusting to your new aligners. Smoothies, eggs, mashed potatoes, and yogurt are yummy options that don't require much chewing. Remember that following a softer diet is only temporary, and in no time, you can switch back to your regular meals.

5.)  Take Over-the-Counter Medication

Some extra help from pain relievers can ease some discomfort you’re feeling. Always be sure to follow the instructions that are listed on the label and don’t hesitate to let your dentist know if you’re unsure about anything!

It's true that it can take a short couple of weeks before you're used to your clear aligners. By following these tips, your journey to a straighter smile will be smooth sailing. Once you finish with the treatment, you may even look back on your experience and think it was worth it to have a healthier smile.

If you’ve been considering straightening your smile with the help of Invisalign but have a condition called bruxism where you grind your teeth, you may be wondering if clear aligners will still work for you. Whereas braces are not affixed to the biting surfaces, Invisalign fits over your teeth, touching all visible parts. This means that if you grind them, it could cause excessive wear on your aligners. But does that mean you simply can’t get them? Here’s what you need to know about wearing Invisalign if you have bruxism.
